Program Description

This 53-week Social Services Support Worker Diploma is a program with 1060 hours of training. Students prepare to be effective social services practitioners by acquiring the knowledge, skills, and values needed to provide support to individuals, families, groups, and communities in need and who are seeking support from a variety of available assistance programs and services.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain a solid understanding of the social and community services available and the role of social services workers in improving the social welfare of individuals and communities.
  • Recognize at-risk behaviors across a variety of groups.
  • Describe the effects of psychoactive chemicals on target populations suffering with mental illness.
  • Describe the effects of mental health in relation to addiction, diagnosis, and medications used in pharmacotherapies and the impact mental health may have on individuals or communities.
  • Describe and discuss the issues, defining traits, intervention, prevention, and safety issues for those suffering with mental illness.
  • Articulate the impact on the client-counsellor relationship with respect to cultural and diversity issues.
  • Familiar with resources available under the broad umbrella of the Canadian health care system.
  • Apply culturally responsive practices to support diverse individuals and communities effectively.
  • Develop and implement strategies to advocate for equity and social justice for marginalized populations.
  • Design interventions using trauma-informed principles to create safe and supportive environments for clients.

Admission Requirements

Basic Requirements
  • Applicants must provide a valid Govt. photo ID or birth certificate
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum Age: 19 years.
  • Mature Students (19+ without high school diploma): May be considered based on work experience, resume, transcripts, and references. An interview may be required.
English Language Proficiency Applicants must meet one of the following:
  • Minimum scores from accepted English tests (e.g., IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, Duolingo 95, etc.).
  • Recent English proficiency test (within 2 years).
  • Proof of English-language education:
    • 2–3 years of secondary or post-secondary education completed in English in eligible countries.
    • International credentials must be recognized by WES, ICES, or IQAS.
